Sicily’s history is one of the richest and most layered in the Mediterranean—a true crossroads where African, Middle Eastern, and European civilizations met, clashed, and blended for over 3,000 years. The verdant island was successively inhabited by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arab and North African Muslims, Normans, and later European powers. Following the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage, Sicily became Rome’s first overseas province in 241 BCE. Centuries later it continued under Byzantine control. In 827 CE, Muslim forces from North Africa arrived, and by the mid-10th century, Sicily was fully under Aghlabid and Fatimid rule, ushering in one of the island’s most transformative eras. In the late 11th century, Christian conquerors from northern Europe—the Normans—seized Sicily, incorporating the prevailing Islamic and Byzantine cultures. From the late Middle Ages onward, Sicily was absorbed into successive European empires, until its integration in 1860 into the Kingdom of Italy, the precursor to the modern nation.
The Strait of Sicily separates the western and eastern Mediterranean seas, as well as Sicily’s southwestern corner from Tunisia’s northeastern coast by 90 miles. The land of Tunisia has been inhabited by Amazigh (Berber) peoples for ages. Around 814 BCE, the Phoenicians established Carthage as a major trading colony. Centuries after the Romans destroyed the city in 146 BCE, a new city arose to the south called Kairouan, founded by the Umayyad general Uqba ibn Nafi around 670 CE during the initial Muslim conquest. From this region, subsequent Muslim dynasties extended control over Sicily, valuing its strategic maritime position, its climate and its resources.
The legacy of Islamic civilization continues to impart important lessons today for visitors to both Sicily and Tunisia. We will traverse the island, which, while part of Italy today, maintains a distinctive identity that in part is rooted in its Islamic heritage. We will then take a short flight to Tunis, capital of Tunisia, where we will visit the ruins of Carthage, before proceeding to Kairouan and further south, including the charming island of Djerba off the Tunisian coast. Given their proximity and shared political and cultural histories, a visit to Sicily and Tunisia provides a unique opportunity to appreciate the multidimensional character of the Mediterranean world.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
Arriving to Sicily (Catania)
Numerous airlines provide service to Sicily, including US carriers and Lufthansa, Air France, and ITA Airways. Participants should book “multi-city” flights arriving in Catania (CTA) by 1pm on Saturday, November 7, preferably in the mid-morning hours. The tour officially begins at 5:00pm on that day with a group orientation meeting in the hotel, an evening walk around the city center, and group welcome dinner. For travelers from the US, this means departing from your city of origin on or before the morning of Friday, November 6. If you like, you can plan your travel to add extra days in a connecting city while in transit before reaching Catania on the specified day.
Departing from Tunisia (Tunis)
The tour concludes on Wednesday, November 18 in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. Based on your departure time, you will be provided a transfer to the international airport (TUN) on that day. Your outgoing flight can be to any destination of your choice. You may also consider spending more time in Tunisia or the region after the conclusion of the tour, and plan your flights, local transportation and additional hotel accommodations accordingly.
Booking Your Flights
Once you’ve paid your deposit to Bayan Tours, you should research and book your flights as soon as possible to try and obtain well-priced airfare with suitable flight timings and layovers. You can use your own travel agent, check airline websites, or use booking sites such as Expedia to select the flight legs that are best for you. We recommend that you choose routes with layovers of not less than 90 minutes.
